Periodontal Treatment

  • Periodontal (gum) disease is inflammation of the gums (gingiva) and damage to the bone that anchors teeth in the jaws. This affects approximately 20% of Australian adults and is the most common cause of tooth loss.
  • The type of treatment you receive will depend on how severe your gum disease has become and your health professional will advise you of this.
  • If you have gingivitis, your dentist will professionally clean your teeth using specialized ultrasonic scalers and conventional hand scalers. You will be provided with advice on how to brush and floss effectively, particularly in those hard to reach areas.
  • If Gum Disease has progressed to Periodontitis, more extensive cleaning will be needed to remove plaque and tartar from the periodontal pockets.
  • Your dentist will monitor the size of the pockets during the following months to ensure the treatment has been successful and the Periodontitis isn’t progressing any further.
